JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – A Tennessee man is accused of negligently discharging his handgun in an apartment, causing a bullet to nearly hit a 9-month-old baby next door, authorities said.

Remington C. Tritt, of Johnson City, was arrested early Tuesday and charged with reckless endangerment, WJHL-TV reported.

“Tritt admitted that he negligently discharged his handgun inside his apartment,” the Johnson City Police Department said in a news release, according to WCYB-TV. Officials said the bullet came close to striking the baby in a neighboring apartment, the television station reported.

The child was allegedly sleeping in a crib in a neighbor’s apartment that was adjoined to Tritt’s residence, WJHL reported.

Police said the bullet came “within close proximity” of the child, according to the television station.

Tritt was arrested and booked into the Washington County Detention Center, online records show. He was released after posting $5,00 bail.
