TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Alabama basketball player Darius Miles and another man have been charged with capital murder after a shooting Sunday morning near campus.
Tuscaloosa Police Capt. Jack Kennedy said in a news conference, according to The Associated Press, that the shooting happened early Sunday morning near campus. Jamea Harris, 23, was shot and killed.
Miles, 21, and Michael Lynn Davis, 20, were and charged with capital murder. Kennedy said, according to the AP, that the capital murder charge is because the death involved gunshots that were fired from a car.
Kennedy said a possible motive was a minor argument that Miles and Davis reportedly had with the victims, according to the AP.
The driver of the other car that Harris was riding in, reportedly approached campus police just before 2 a.m., according to AL.com. The driver reported that someone had shot into the car and he had fired back in self-defense.
One of the men was injured in the shooting which was non-life-threatening. They were treated at the hospital for those injuries, according to the AP.
Alabama reportedly announced that Miles was out for the season prior to Saturday’s game against LSU due to an ankle injury. AL.com reported that Miles’ biography has been removed from the athletic department’s website.
The University of Alabama Athletics released a statement following Miles’ arrest, according to AL.com, saying that they are aware of what happened last night and “extend our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of the victim.”

“We were made aware of the recent charge against student-athlete Darius Miles; he has been removed from campus and is no longer a member of the Alabama men’s basketball team,” the university said, according to AL.com.
Neither the driver of the other car, Harris nor Davis appear to be affiliated with the university, Kennedy said, according to the AP.
