BALTIMORE – A teen was found shot in a park near a high school in Baltimore, Maryland on Monday, police say.
In a news release, Baltimore Police Department said on Monday around 2 p.m., officers were called out to the 5900 block of East Pratt Street for a reported shooting. Once officers arrived, they found a teen who was unresponsive.
Police say the 16-year-old student from Patterson High School was shot in the head.
The Baltimore Sun identified him as Izaiah Carter.
Carter was taken to the hospital where he died from his injuries, according to WJZ-TV. Multiple witnesses told officers that they heard the gunshots and then saw numerous people running away in different directions.
“What we need to know is who was with the student, why they were in the park at this hour prior to the release of school and anything they saw, heard or know about this situation in this playground so we can hold these individuals accountable for yet another student, yet another young person, yet another student at a Baltimore City school,” Baltimore Police Commissioner Michael Harrison said, according to WJZ-TV.
The CEO of Baltimore City Schools said the district has cameras and protocols in place to prevent students from leaving campus during the school day, The Baltimore Sun reported. But still, students find ways to leave school.
No person of interest has been identified yet, the news outlet said. A motive or what led up to the incident has not yet been released.
