LOS ANGELES – The quirky, alternative band They Might Be Giants announced the postponement of their June concert dates after co-founding member John Flansburgh was involved in a “serious car accident,” Rolling Stone reported.
In a Twitter post shared Thursday, co-founder John Linnell said Flansburgh, 62, was involved in a “rather serious” accident after the band’s show in New York City on Wednesday. Linnell, 62, said that his friend since his teen years has seven broken ribs, several with multiple fractures.
No vital organs were involved and the “long-term prognosis seems positive,” Linnell wrote on Twitter.
Wednesday’s concert date was the first of a rescheduled tour marking the 30th anniversary of the band’s breakout 1990 album, “Flood,” Rolling Stone reported. “Flood” has been certified platinum and is one of the group’s 23 album releases.
The duo had to postpone concert dates in New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington, Entertainment Weekly reported. Those dates had been previously rescheduled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the entertainment outlet reported.
Linnell and Flansburgh hope to resume the tour’s late summer dates at the end of August, according to Entertainment Weekly.
The duo’s sold-out tour picks is scheduled to start back on Aug. 30 in Asbury Park, New Jersey, Rolling Stone reported.
On Friday, Flansburgh shared an Instagram post where he offered “greetings from the hospital.”
“I am writing to you with my glasses a crumpled memory, while under a thick cloud of pain medication. In spite of that, I wanted to write to all of you to explain what exactly happened to me,” Flansburgh wrote before describing the incident in detail.
“While the pain in my side has only gotten worse since, it is my heart that is really breaking over these events,” Flansburgh continued. “I would understand anyone thinking we are just a band born under a bad sign and giving up hope, but I also know someday we will rock again — and for me, that day couldn’t come soon enough.
“Until then I will be watching reruns of ‘Sex in the City’ until I am strong enough to reach the remote. Wish me luck. I’m going to need it.”
Flansburgh has written several notable songs for They Might Be Giants, including “Boss of Me,” “Birdhouse In Your Soul,” “Particle Man,” “Doctor Worm” and “James K. Polk.”
