GARY, Ind. – An Indiana toddler is recovering after he was shot three times early Wednesday, authorities said.
According to the Times of Northwest Indiana and WLS-TV, the incident occurred shortly before 3 a.m. on East Seventh Avenue in Gary. Gary police arrived to find a 3-year-old boy with multiple gunshot wounds, the outlets reported. He was flown to a nearby hospital for treatment, and his condition has since stabilized, a family member told WLS.
Investigators said the toddler’s mother, who was not home when the incident occurred, did not know what led to the shooting, the news outlets reported. The boy had been in the care of someone else, whom police plan to question, according to the Times.
In a statement obtained by WLS, Gary Mayor Jerome Price said news of the shooting “breaks [his] heart.”
“Our Gary Police Department investigators will get to the bottom of this incident, and we will bring the full weight and authority of the city of Gary down on the adult or adults responsible for this,” the statement read, in part. “We will give this injured child justice.”
