TAMPA, Fla. – Former NFL wide receiver Reche Caldwell was killed in a shooting outside of his Florida home Saturday night.

Investigators said Caldwell, 41, was ambushed and shot around 11 p.m. in a possible attempted robbery, the Tampa Bay Times reported.

“He was set up,” his mother, Deborah Caldwell, told the Times. “I’m going to follow it all the way to the end. … You get killed right here in your hometown? You made a statement here, and y’all just took it away from us?”

Caldwell played baseball and football at a Tampa high school before attending the University of Florida where he played wide receiver.
