DETROIT – A cleaning crew working at an abandoned home in Detroit made a grisly discovery, finding an adult human skeleton on a couch.
It is unclear if the remains found Thursday were of a man or a woman, WJBK reported.
“I see all kinds of stuff, these are abandoned houses we’re talking about,” Quincy Norman, who works for a company that contracts with the Detroit Land Bank, told the television station. “I walked past the couch that I walked past like a week ago and nothing has changed in the house — but I didn’t see it until today.”
Norman did a double-take when he saw the skeleton.
“It was leaned over on the couch like may have been sleeping or something,” Norman told WJBK. “Like he may have fallen asleep.”
Norman whisked his crew out of the house, locked the front door, and called 911, MLive reported.
Neighbors told WJBK that they had not seen anyone living in the home for about two years, and the last person they saw was a squatter who was unable to pay property taxes.
It is not clear whether the remains belong to that man or someone else, the television station reported.
“Especially during these COVID times you definitely want to keep the family close,” Norman told WJBK. “If the body was there for a year-plus that means nobody called and even if they tried, they couldn’t get in contact with him.
“I hope they find out who this guy is because it is very unfortunate he had to go like that.”
