Part of both lanes of Highway 1 near Big Sur crumbled after debris flow, flooding and mudslides, KFSN reported.

“I was in the area, when I noticed this section of roadway, specifically the southbound lane, had fallen off into the ocean,” California Highway Patrol Officer John Yerace told KABC. “Some time overnight, prior to 6:30 in the morning, we responded back to the scene with the assistance of Caltrans access and realized that the roadway is now gone.”

The National Weather Service said the storm dropped about 14 inches of rain Wednesday and Thursday, KABC reported.

The California Highway Patrol warns drivers to stay away from the washed out road for their safety.
