WARREN, Mich. – Lipari Foods has issued a voluntary recall of certain lots of sesame sticks mix, along with roasted and salted sunflowers meat tub products, due to an undeclared cashew allergen.
In a news release, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration said the Warren, Michigan-based company distributed the products in 18 states. Lipari said that consumers with an allergy or severe sensitivity to cashews are at risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reactions if they eat the products.
The USDA said the products were distributed as a generic without branding to retail outlets in Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Carolina, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas, Tennessee, Wisconsin, and West Virginia.
There are no reported illnesses in connection with these so far, the USDA said.
In a statement, Lipari Foods said the undeclared allergens were brought to its attention by its sister company, JLM, after they discovered cashews in the bulk Oil Roasted and Salted Sunflower Seeds product from their bulk supplier, Shah Trading Co.
The bulk product was used to package the sesame sticks mix and the roasted and salted sunflower meat tub products, the company said.
“We are working closely with the FDA to ensure that all potentially impacted product has been pulled from commerce,” Lipari said in its statement.
The USDA urges consumers who have bought the products to either throw them away or return them to the point of purchase. Consumers with questions can call Lipari’s customer service at 800-729-3354 from 8:15 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., EDT, Monday through Friday.
