FREMONT, Neb. – A Nebraska man who faces a first-degree murder charge in the stabbing death of his baby cousin had not been taking the medicine he had been prescribed for depression, authorities said.
According to The Associated Press and the Lincoln Journal Star, Alexander Hernandez, 19, of Fremont, is accused of stabbing and killing the 4-month-old baby girl last month. In addition to murder, he also faces child abuse and weapons charges, the Star reported.
Fremont police responded to Hernandez’s home about 9:30 p.m. Jan. 9 after a 911 caller said a man armed with a knife and an unresponsive child were at the scene, according to the Star. Officers arrived to find an infant with 16 stab wounds to the chest and abdomen, the newspaper reported. She died at a nearby hospital, authorities said.
According to police, a witness heard the infant crying and saw Hernandez stabbing the child. He was later arrested and remains jailed without bond, the Star reported.
Hernandez, who appeared before a judge Tuesday, is slated to have another court appearance Feb. 22, according to the Star.
