MERCED, Calif. – A California man accused in the shooting death of a 9-month-old boy was arrested on Thursday, authorities said.
Daevon Motshwane, 18, of Merced, was arrested at about 3 p.m. PST in Gilroy, about 80 miles away, the Merced Sun-Star reported.
Motshwane is accused of killing Darius King Grigsby, who was being walked in a stroller by his mother on Nov. 9, according to the newspaper. The woman was accompanied by a male friend.
According to police, Motshwane was allegedly targeting the man walking with the child’s mother, KFSN-TV reported. A vehicle had pulled up near the victims and a gunman, whom police believe was Motshwane, fired toward them, according to the television station.
Merced Police Lt. Joseph Perez told the Sun-Star that detectives canvassed the area for video surveillance and discovered that the suspected vehicle was a maroon Chevrolet Trailblazer.
On Monday, detectives located the vehicle and arrested a 17-year-old male who was determined as the vehicle’s driver, according to KFSN.
Detectives learned that Motshwane was in Gilroy and worked with authorities there to detain him.
Motshwane is expected to be booked for homicide, along with two counts of attempted homicide and gang enhancement charges, according to the Sun-Star.
