Sheriff’s deputies said the ambulance, owned by Hernando County Fire and Emergency Services, was taken from the ambulance bay at Oak Hill Hospital in Brooksville around 12:30 p.m. Sunday. The theft happened as the ambulance’s crew was inside the hospital dropping off a patient, officials said.

Investigators determined the ambulance was driven about 10 miles to the southwest, near Kass Circle and Port Court. The vehicle became stuck in mud and sand as it approached a body of water off Port Court, officials said.

Witnesses told authorities that the suspected thief ran from the ambulance toward a nearby shopping plaza. Officials took Trey Cornwell, 29, into custody a short while later.

Officials arrested Cornwell on a charge of grand theft auto. He remained jailed Monday on a $10,000 bond.
